FAQ's about FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Q. Does every student now get free breakfast and lunch?

A. Yes, this waiver is open to all and there is no application needed; however, if you believe that your family might be eligible, please apply for the meal benefits.  During “ normal” times, families need to reapply each year.  If you qualify, you will likely want this in place when free meals are no longer available to everyone.  Applying for the meal program not only helps to support the CCSD Food and Nutrition Services Department, but also provides additional funding for educational programs across the district.

Q: How long will this last?

A: The federal waiver has been extended to December 31, 2020.

Q: Why?

A: This allows schools across the country to provide meals to students in need,  whether remote or in person, without the administrative burden of verifying eligibility.  It also provides additional support for all families during the pandemic.

Q: Is all food free?

A: The basic meal is free for breakfast and lunch.  Any add-ons or snacks will be charged to your student's meal account.

Q: We were charged for food in August and September.  Will we get a refund?

A: All basic meals should have been free starting 9/1/2020 – we are waiting for guidance from USDA on August payments, it has not been determined if those will be refunded yet or not.

Q: Isn't this a waste of District money, to give free food to families who would otherwise pay?

A: The National School Lunch and Breakfast Program is funded by the USDA.  The CCSD Food and Nutrition Services  (FNS) Department is self- supporting and receives no money from the district general fund to operate.  Our program is totally funded by the meal reimbursement from USDA and our sales of a la carte items and meals.  In fact, the FNS pays $700,000 + per year to the district for utilities, administrative support, and things like repairs done by district staff.
